Otis Street Arts Project is currently hosting, ARTgineering v2.0, an eclectic collection of artworks that explore the implications of the impact of math and science on the world in which we live. Curated by David Mordini, Chris Combs, and Gloria Chapa and including unexpected vehicles such as automated teddy bears and rewired instruments, the exhibit doesn’t merely showcase the magic of contemporary engineering, it outlines how new technology reflects societal choices.

Frank McCauley’s video, welter/wallow, illustrates the enhanced sophistication of common media and how these forces might be changing us. Capturing and editing his film with software no more refined than an average iPhone, McCauley uses the power of conventional tools to track an amorphous, metallic form moving through the personal areas of a house. These graphics are not just eye candy, but a practical means of calling attention to the ways in which technologies intrude into the realms where people privately operate, including the voyeuristic effects of devices like smartphones have had on us. McCauley says, “… I was more interested in abstracting the body, and exploring the spaces that we construct around ourselves, and how we affect the landscape around us with our daily actions.” By erasing the figure with equipment available to all of us, McCauley concentrates on our domestic environments in order to extract a better understanding of how we live.
