After it emerged back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Second wave of feminism quickly took over and empowered an entire generation of women artists to reconsider their positions regardless of the differences in their contexts. The American art world soon became populated by the voice of those who have been traditionally silenced, and, what we now know as feminist art, was born.

There are many contemporary artists who continue to deal with issues surrounding women’s rights, including Julie Mehretu, Regina Jose Galindo, and Juno Calypso. Here, we have gathered nine contemporary feminist artists who have shaped and continue to shape the movement greatly.
